What is Dabu Print?

Dabu print is a unique mud-resist hand block printing technique practiced primarily in Akola village, Rajasthan, and parts of the broader Jaipur print cluster. The process involves applying a resist paste (made from black clay, wheat chaff, and gum) onto fabric using hand-carved wooden blocks. When the fabric is dip-dyed in indigo or other colours, the areas protected by the dabu paste resist the dye, creating beautiful negative-space patterns. When the paste is washed off, intricate white-reserve designs emerge against the dyed background.

In digital printing, the dabu aesthetic is recreated with its characteristic crackle texture (from the dried mud paste) and the organic, slightly imperfect quality of resist patterns - instantly recognizable as a craft technique.

Origin & History of Dabu Print

Dabu printing has been practiced for at least 400 years in Rajasthan, rooted in the craft traditions of the Chippa caste who specialize in textile dyeing and printing. The technique is closely related to Bagru printing - historically, Dabu was the first resist step before Bagru block printing was applied over it. Akola village in Chittorgarh district is the primary surviving centre of pure dabu printing today.

The technique's connection to natural materials - clay, wheat chaff, lime, and natural dyes - has made Dabu a significant craft in the eco-textile and natural dye movement. Several artisans in the Akola cluster have been recognized by national craft bodies for preserving this technique.
