Zebra print features irregular black and white (or black and cream) wavy stripes that mimic the distinctive coat pattern of the African zebra. Unlike regular stripes, zebra markings are organic and irregular - each "stripe" varies in width and curvature, creating a dynamic visual rhythm that is both structured and fluid. Fashion versions range from naturalistic zebra (closely resembling actual zebra markings) to bold graphic interpretations and non-traditional colourways.
Origin & History of Zebra Print
African wildlife-inspired prints became fashionable in European clothing in the early 20th century, driven by colonial safari culture and the European fascination with Africa's wildlife. Zebra print gained fashion prominence alongside leopard in the 1950s-70s, both associated with glamour and exotic style. The print was championed by designers including Emilio Pucci, who used it in his resort and ski collections, and was a signature of the 1980s power fashion era.
Why Designers & Brands Choose Zebra Print
Zebra print has a strong "instant statement" quality - the high-contrast pattern is immediately impactful even in small doses. It works as a bold accent print for accessories or as a full-garment statement in fashion. The black-and-white colour scheme makes it versatile across styling.

Buying Tips for Zebra Print
Tip 1: Wash testing is critical. Boil a small piece in hot water for 10 minutes - if it shrinks more than 3%, switch to pre-shrunk fabric.
Tip 2: Check the GSM rating before ordering. Heavier GSM means more body and structure, lighter GSM gives more flow.
Surat mills specialize in polyester and blended fabrics. For pure cotton, we source from Ahmedabad and Bhilwara.
