What is Warli Print?

Warli is a tribal art form originating from the Warli people of North Maharashtra (Palghar district) and parts of Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Traditionally painted on the walls of homes using white rice paste on a red-ochre mud background, Warli art features simple geometric figures - triangles representing human forms and mountains, circles for the sun and moon, squares for sacred enclosures - combined into lively narrative scenes of community life, harvest, and nature.

On fabric, Warli print recreates these iconic white-on-earth compositions: dancing figures (tarpa dance), scenes of planting and harvesting, birds, animals, and spiralling trees. The palette is characteristically minimal - white line art on earthy terracotta, brown, or black grounds.

Origin & History of Warli Print

Warli art is estimated to be over 2,500 years old, though it was only "discovered" by the urban art world in the 1970s when artist Jivya Soma Mashe brought it to national and international attention. The art was traditionally made by women for wedding ceremonies and harvest pituals, always on the mud walls of homes. Each Warli painting tells a story - of community gathering, of the agricultural cycle, or of prayers to Palaghata (the mother goddess).

Today, Warli has been applied to canvas, paper, pottery, furniture, and fabric by both tribal artisans and commercial printers. It has appeared in international galleries and is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage form. Jivya Soma Mashe received the Padma Shri for his contributions to the craft.
