Chanderi Fabric
India's heritage sheer weave from Madhya Pradesh - traditional Chanderi silk-cotton fabric for premium ethnic fashion and handloom-inspired collections.
What is Chanderi Fabric?
Chanderi is a traditional Indian fabric from Chanderi town in Madhya Pradesh, woven from a silk warp and cotton weft (or pure silk) creating a distinctive lightweight, sheer, and luminous textile. It is characterised by its natural sheen (from the silk component), translucent quality, and lightweight drape. Chanderi fabric features traditional 'butis' (small motifs) woven in gold or silver zari. In modern versions, digital and screen-printed Chanderi-inspired fabric replicates this aesthetic using polyester-viscose blends, making it accessible for mass-market ethnic fashion.
Key Properties
Key properties: lightweight and sheer, natural silk sheen with cotton comfort, beautifully translucent, features woven butis in traditional variants, soft drape, GI-protected authentic product, cool to wear. Chanderi's combination of silk lustre and cotton breathability makes it uniquely suited to India's climate for ethnic occasion wear.
Origin & History
Chanderi weaving has a history of over 2,500 years, with mention in the Mahabharata. The town of Chanderi was a major trade centre under the Malwa Sultans and later the Mughals, who patronised its fine silk-cotton weaving. Chanderi received Geographical Indication (GI) tag protection in 2005. The weaving community (primarily Koshti weavers) has been revitalised through government programmes and the growing appreciation for Handloom heritage fabric. Authentic Chanderi requires certification; many machine-made versions replicate the aesthetic.
Why Brands Choose Chanderi
Chanderi occupies a premium positioning in Indian ethnic fashion - it is more accessible than pure silk but significantly more premium than polyester. For boutique brands and designer labels, Chanderi fabric is a mark of quality and craft heritage. The growing consumer appreciation for Indian handloom and heritage textiles has driven Chanderi's popularity among fashion designers and contemporary ethnic wear brands. For export buyers interested in authentic Indian textile crafts, Chanderi is a highly marketable product.
