Silk Fabric
Pure and art silk fabric in mulberry, tussar, and dupion variants - India's heritage luxury fibre for bridal, occasion, and premium ethnic fashion.
What is Silk Fabric?
Silk is a natural protein fibre produced by the silkworm (Bombyx mori) and is the most lustrous and luxurious of all natural fibres. Indian silk fabric includes mulberry silk (smooth, lustrous, from cultivated silkworms), tussar/tasar silk (wild silk with a coarser texture and natural gold tone), eri silk (soft, opaque), and muga silk (Assam's rare golden silk with GI protection). Art silk (polyester or viscose silk-look fabric) is widely used as an affordable alternative. India is the world's second-largest silk producer after China.
Key Properties
Key properties: natural lustre and sheen, smooth and cool against skin, strong (strongest natural fibre by weight), excellent drape, breathable and temperature-regulating, takes dye brilliantly for deep and vivid colours, requires delicate care. Pure silk is expensive; art silk (polyester/viscose) offers similar visual appeal at fraction of the cost.
Origin & History
India has a silk weaving tradition dating back over 3,000 years. Varanasi (Banaras) is India's most famous silk weaving centre, producing the GI-protected Banarasi silk saree - a UNESCO-recognised craft. Karnataka's Mysore silk (Mysore crepe silk) is another GI-protected Indian silk. Assam's muga silk is the world's only naturally golden silk. Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh (Dharmavaram, Pochampally), and West Bengal also have major silk weaving traditions. Indian bridal fashion is almost synonymous with silk fabric.
Why Brands Choose Silk
Silk commands the premium end of Indian fashion. Bridal sarees, lehengas, sherwanis, and occasion wear in pure silk represent the highest-value segment of Indian textile wholesale. For exporters, Indian silk fabric - particularly art silk and printed silk - is a major export category to the Middle East, USA, UK, and Southeast Asia. For domestic brands, silk-look fabric (art silk) at accessible prices allows premium aesthetics in mass-market collections.

Silk is our premium category. Pure silk prices start at Rs 200 per meter and go up to Rs 800+ for heavy Banarasi silk. We source pure silk from Mysore and Varanasi directly. Art silk comes from our Surat network. Silk needs careful handling during shipping - we use acid-free tissue wrapping for all silk orders above 50 meters.
Buying Tips for Silk
Tip 1: Order winter fabrics (velvet, wool-blend) by July-August. Prices go up 15-20% after September.
Tip 2: For digital printing, always use RFD (Ready for Dyeing) finish fabric. Pre-dyed fabric does not take digital prints cleanly.
Surat to Delhi NCR fabric shipments take 3-4 days by road. We also offer express courier for urgent orders.
