Georgette Fabric
The fabric of Indian fashion - lightweight, flowing, and print-ready georgette in pure, chiffon-georgette, and polyester variants for sarees, kurtis, and occasion wear.
What is Georgette Fabric?
Georgette is a lightweight, sheer, crepe-woven fabric with a characteristic crinkled surface and excellent drape. It is made from highly twisted yarns - originally silk, now predominantly polyester - producing a matte, slightly rough texture that distinguishes it from smoother fabrics like chiffon and satin. Georgette flows beautifully with movement, making it ideal for sarees, dupattas, kurtis, and flowy fashion. It is available in pure georgette (heavier, better drape), chiffon-georgette (lighter, sheerer), and double georgette (more body, less transparent).
Key Properties
Key properties: crinkled crepe texture, semi-sheer to sheer, excellent flow and drape, lightweight (60-100 GSM typically), holds prints well with vibrant colour output, slightly elastic recovery, good for pleating and gathering. Georgette is one of the best fabrics for digital and screen printing due to its smooth enough surface for fine detail.
Origin & History
Georgette was named after early 20th century French dressmaker Georgette de la Plante. The fabric was originally woven in silk but polyester georgette became dominant globally from the 1960s onward due to cost and consistency. In India, georgette became the standard saree fabric from the 1970s onwards, replacing heavier silks for everyday occasion wear. Surat, Gujarat became the world's largest georgette manufacturing hub, producing the majority of global polyester georgette supply.
Why Brands Choose Georgette
Georgette is among the top 3 highest-volume fabrics in Indian wholesale. Its combination of lightweight wearability, excellent print quality, and elegant drape makes it the default choice for sarees, party wear kurtis, and occasion fashion. For exporters, georgette sarees and dress material are consistent sellers in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and diaspora markets globally. The fabric's print receptivity makes it ideal for every type of print - from traditional ethnic motifs to contemporary digital art.
