Voile Fabric
Sheer, lightweight cotton voile fabric for summer fashion, home textiles, and elegant ethnic wear - India's voile specialist for domestic and export brands.
What is Voile Fabric?
Voile is a sheer, lightweight plain-weave fabric with an open texture. It is traditionally made from cotton, but polyester and cotton-polyester voile are also common. Cotton voile is made from tightly twisted yarns woven at a low thread count, creating its characteristic crispness and sheerness. Voile is softer and drapier than organdy (which is also sheer but stiffer). It is used extensively for window curtains, women's summer clothing, scarves, and lightweight ethnic wear. In India, cotton voile is popular for summer kurtis, dupattas, and lightweight sarees.
Key Properties
Key properties: sheer and transparent, lightweight (60-100 GSM typical), crisp and slightly textured feel (unlike chiffon which is smooth), excellent drape, breathable and comfortable in warm weather, takes printing well (particularly screen and digital), slight natural crispness. Cotton voile is slightly more textured than polyester voile; polyester voile is more wrinkle-resistant. The sheerness of voile means garments often need lining or layering.
Origin & History
The name 'voile' comes from the French word for 'veil'. It was historically used for fine veils, curtains, and delicate garments. In India, cotton voile has been popular for generations as a summer fabric. Switzerland was historically famous for Swiss voile - fine quality embroidered voile used for luxury fashion. In India, voile is produced primarily in cotton-growing states including Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. Printed cotton voile from India is a significant export product for European summer fashion.
Why Brands Choose Voile
Voile's combination of sheerness, drape, and breathability makes it unique among cotton fabrics. For summer fashion brands, cotton voile produces beautiful, flowing garments that are both elegant and comfortable. For home textile brands, voile curtains are a major product category. For ethnic wear, voile dupattas and kurtis with block or digital prints are growing premium categories. Export buyers for European summer fashion frequently seek Indian printed cotton voile.
