Crepe Fabric
Textured, fluid, and wrinkle-resistant crepe fabric for professional, occasion, and fusion fashion - one of India's most versatile wholesale fabrics.
What is Crepe Fabric?
Crepe is a fabric with a distinctive crinkled or grainy surface texture, achieved through highly twisted yarns, special weaving techniques, or chemical treatments. Unlike smooth fabrics like satin, crepe has a matte, textured appearance that drapes elegantly and resists wrinkles well. Common crepe types include polyester crepe (most common), crepe de chine (silk-based, finer), moss crepe (heavier, more textured), and satin crepe (smooth on one side, crinkled on the other). Crepe is widely used in professional and occasion fashion because it looks structured yet fluid.
Key Properties
Key properties: textured matte surface, excellent wrinkle resistance, good drape and body, medium weight (100-180 GSM typically), comfortable to wear for extended periods, holds prints well with a slightly muted colour tone due to surface texture. Crepe is favoured for professional wear because it holds its shape through the day without creasing.
Origin & History
Crepe weaving has origins in ancient China and medieval Europe, where crinkled silk fabrics were produced for luxury fashion. The name comes from the French word 'crepe' (curly). Crepe de chine (China crepe) was a prestigious silk fabric traded along the Silk Road. In India, synthetic crepe became popular in the 1980s and 1990s for office and occasion wear. Today, polyester crepe from Surat is widely used across India for professional kurtas, sarees, and formal fashion.
Why Brands Choose Crepe
Crepe occupies a premium position in Indian wholesale - it is heavier and more structured than chiffon or georgette, but lighter and more fluid than cotton or linen. This positioning makes it ideal for office wear, formal occasions, and premium ethnic fashion where the garment needs to maintain its shape. For exporters, crepe fabric in neutral tones and professional colours is a consistent category in the Middle East and European markets.

From Our Warehouse - Sahil Luthra, Clothwala
Written by Sahil Luthra, Founder - Clothwala.com | Based in Surat, India
We have been supplying crepe to garment units in Surat and Delhi NCR since 2018. Polyester crepe from our mills runs between Rs 45-80 per meter depending on weight. Most buyers order 6 KG crepe for kurtis and 8 KG for formal blazers. One thing we always tell new buyers - check the twist count. Low-twist crepe pills faster and does not hold its shape after 3-4 washes. Our minimum order is 200 meters per colour.
Buying Tips for Crepe
Tip 1: Check the GSM rating before ordering. Heavier GSM means more body and structure, lighter GSM gives more flow.
Tip 2: Colour fastness varies by dye lot. We recommend ordering all your fabric for a single collection in one go to ensure colour consistency.
Over 800 textile mills operate in the Surat-Pandesara-Sachin belt, where Clothwala sources most of its polyester range.
