Dobby Fabric
Textured dobby weave fabric with subtle geometric patterns - versatile cotton dobby for shirts, kurtis, and premium casual wear collections.
What is Dobby Fabric?
Dobby fabric is a woven textile with small, geometric, and textured patterns created using a dobby attachment on the loom. Unlike jacquard which creates elaborate patterns, dobby creates simple, repetitive geometric motifs - dots, diamonds, stripes, small squares, and waffle-like textures. Dobby fabric has a slightly raised texture that gives it visual interest without being too decorative. It is typically made from cotton, cotton-polyester blends, or linen. The texture makes it more visually interesting than plain poplin while being far less ornate than brocade.
Key Properties
Key properties: subtle woven texture and geometric pattern (not printed), good body and structure, breathable (especially cotton dobby), somewhat crisp hand feel, excellent for printing or dyeing as a textured base, moderate weight (typically 100-160 GSM for apparel), good drape for structured garments. Cotton dobby is comfortable and breathable; polyester dobby is more wrinkle-resistant. The woven texture adds visual interest to plain garments.
Origin & History
The dobby loom was invented in the early 19th century as a simplified version of the jacquard mechanism. The name 'dobby' may derive from 'draw boy' - the child who would pull the harness cords on early pattern looms. Dobby fabric became popular in men's shirting and women's blouses in the 20th century for its texture without the expense of jacquard. In India, dobby fabric is produced across textile clusters in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, primarily for shirting and ethnic wear.
Why Brands Choose Dobby
Dobby fabric occupies a sweet spot between plain poplin and expensive jacquard - it offers texture and visual interest at accessible price points. For shirt manufacturers, dobby shirting is a premium alternative to plain poplin. For ethnic wear, dobby fabric adds subtle sophistication to kurtis and kurtas without the formality of brocade. Export buyers from Europe and USA appreciate the crafted, textured look of dobby for casual and smart-casual collections.

At Clothwala, we have been in the textile wholesale business since 2018, operating from Surat - India's largest synthetic fabric hub. We work directly with 40+ mills, which means our buyers get factory-level pricing without middleman markup. Every fabric we list has been tested by our team for wash durability, colour fastness, and drape quality before it goes on the website. We ship to garment units, boutiques, and exporters across India with a minimum order of 200 meters.
Buying Tips for Dobby
Tip 1: For digital printing, always use RFD (Ready for Dyeing) finish fabric. Pre-dyed fabric does not take digital prints cleanly.
Tip 2: Fabric width matters for cutting efficiency. Our 44-inch fabric suits kurtis and blouses, 58-inch works better for sarees and gowns.
Surat's textile market employs over 8 lakh workers directly and contributes Rs 46,000 crore annually to India's economy.
