Linen Fabric
Natural, breathable, and textured linen fabric for premium casual, ethnic, and home textile collections - the fabric of conscious luxury.
What is Linen Fabric?
Linen is a natural bast fibre fabric made from the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). It is one of the world's oldest textiles and is renowned for its natural texture, breathability, and cool feel. Linen has a characteristic slubbed appearance from the natural variation in flax fibres, giving it an organic, handcrafted aesthetic. It is stronger than cotton, becomes softer with each wash, and is naturally antibacterial. Linen is available in pure linen, linen-cotton blend, linen-viscose blend, and linen-polyester blend variants.
Key Properties
Key properties: highly breathable and cool - ideal for hot climates, natural slub texture gives organic premium aesthetic, strong and durable, becomes softer with washing, moisture-wicking, naturally antibacterial, wrinkles easily (considered part of its charm in fashion), heavier than cotton (150-300 GSM typical). Linen is India's premium natural fabric for summer and resort collections.
Origin & History
Linen has been cultivated for over 10,000 years - ancient Egyptian mummies were wrapped in linen, and it was the fabric of choice for ancient Mediterranean civilisations. In India, linen weaving is concentrated in West Bengal (particularly Murshidabad), with India importing much of its raw flax from France and Belgium (the world's finest flax regions). Indian linen weaving has grown significantly since 2010, driven by growing domestic demand for premium natural fabrics and export demand from the EU and USA.
Why Brands Choose Linen
Linen occupies the premium sustainable fabric position in Indian fashion. For export brands, linen meets EU and US market demands for natural, breathable, and sustainable fabric. Domestically, linen's premium positioning commands higher retail prices - a linen kurta typically retails at 2-3x the price of a cotton equivalent. For home textiles, linen is the aspirational fabric for curtains, cushions, and table linen in the premium home decor segment. Linen-blend fabrics offer the linen aesthetic at more accessible price points.

Written by Sahil Luthra, Founder - Clothwala.com | Based in Surat, India
At Clothwala, we have been in the textile wholesale business since 2018, operating from Surat - India's largest synthetic fabric hub. We work directly with 40+ mills, which means our buyers get factory-level pricing without middleman markup. Every fabric we list has been tested by our team for wash durability, colour fastness, and drape quality before it goes on the website. We ship to garment units, boutiques, and exporters across India with a minimum order of 200 meters.
Buying Tips for Linen
Tip 1: Wash testing is critical. Boil a small piece in hot water for 10 minutes - if it shrinks more than 3%, switch to pre-shrunk fabric.
Tip 2: Check the GSM rating before ordering. Heavier GSM means more body and structure, lighter GSM gives more flow.
Surat mills specialize in polyester and blended fabrics. For pure cotton, we source from Ahmedabad and Bhilwara.
