The legendary fabric of Bengal - fine, breathable muslin cotton for summer fashion, ethnic wear, and the global conscious fashion market.
Muslin is a loosely woven, fine cotton fabric known for its soft, breathable, and lightweight qualities. The name 'muslin' is believed to derive from the city of Mosul in Iraq (a major trade centre for fine cotton) or from Dacca (now Dhaka), Bangladesh, which produced the finest muslin in history. Today, muslin refers to a range of plain-weave cotton fabrics from sheer and ultra-fine to medium weight. It is one of the most comfortable fabrics for hot and humid climates and has seen a strong revival in sustainable fashion.
Key properties: very breathable and lightweight (80-150 GSM typical), soft and comfortable, becomes even softer with washing, slightly rough initially but very comfortable with wear, good absorbency, minimal stretch, excellent for printing (both traditional and modern). Muslin is sometimes confused with cotton cambric, but muslin has a slightly looser weave and more casual texture.
Dhaka muslin (also called 'Woven Air' or 'Flowing Water') was the most prized fabric in the ancient and medieval world - Mughal empresses reportedly wore muslin saris so fine that the entire garment could pass through a finger ring. The art was nearly lost during British colonial rule (accounts suggest colonial authorities prevented the craft to promote British mill cotton). Bangladesh's Dhaka muslin received GI protection in 2021. In India, West Bengal, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu produce fine muslin cotton.
Muslin has had a significant revival in the global sustainable fashion movement. Its natural, breathable quality and minimal processing make it a favourite for eco-conscious brands. In India, muslin cotton for summer kurtas and ethnic wear is growing in premium fashion segments. For international buyers, Indian muslin is associated with authentic heritage fabric and sustainability. Block-printed muslin from Jaipur and Bagru is a major artisan fashion export product.

Muslin is one of our fast-moving fabric types - light, breathable, and perfect for summer collections. We stock 44-inch and 58-inch widths in 4 KG to 8 KG weights. Price range is Rs 40-75 per meter. Most muslin orders come from kurti and dress manufacturers in Jaipur, Delhi, and Kolkata. Tip - always check the weave tightness, loose-weave muslin does not hold stitching well.
Tip 1: Wash testing is critical. Boil a small piece in hot water for 10 minutes - if it shrinks more than 3%, switch to pre-shrunk fabric.
Tip 2: Check the GSM rating before ordering. Heavier GSM means more body and structure, lighter GSM gives more flow.
Surat mills specialize in polyester and blended fabrics. For pure cotton, we source from Ahmedabad and Bhilwara.
